Framing, rewriting, and reception in world literature: the case of Wolf Totem

Abstract When world literature is seen as a product of translation and circulation mode reading, new attributes, other than literariness, can be inferred, such relevance to readers, combination cultural peculiarity universality, accessibility. A case study Wolf Totem reveals that these attributes explain how commercial publishers frame, translators rewrite, readers interpret works. Commercial publishers’ framing discourses usually highlight novel’s universality; emphasize accessibility while rewriting texts accommodate target literary norms readers’ pathos; interests converge at themes relevant their lives, thus promoting the evolution interpretation toward shared experiences humanity. Using content analysis tools, our addresses lack empirical in reception by examining value online reader reviews explaining effect readership’s criteria for rewriting. We contend mass participate formation through word-of-mouth recommendations sharing reading experiences. Therefore, significance deserves scholarly attention studies.
